The illegal cultivation of cannabis is widespread throughout Africa, particularly Morocco. The use of cocaine is also on the rise nearly everywhere in southern and western Africa, especially in Nigeria and South Africa. It is these areas that are the main routes for cocaine on its way from South America to Europe and North America. Heroin use is on the rise in major urban centers of Africa, as well as in Egypt and in most countries in eastern and southern Africa. There is particular concern over the use of amphetamines in several African countries. The authorities are carrying out more and more raids on secret labs making synthetic drugs. In July 2002, the South African authorities seized equipment and more than 100 tons of chemicals that could have been used to produce 90 million methaqualone pills.
