Armed robbers target cash van, steal almost €1 mln
A dramatic heist took place in the port town of Lavrio, in southeastern Attica, on Thursday, as four armed robbers ambushed a cash delivery van and made off with nearly 1 million euros.
According to security staff, the suspects were dressed in white overalls and surgical masks and had been waiting outside a toy store for the van.
They used a smoke grenade to force the driver to slow down. Then, one of the assailants slashed the van’s tires, while others threw black paint on the windshield, immobilizing the vehicle. Under threat of a Kalashnikov rifle, the driver opened the doors, allowing the thieves to take 15 bags of cash.
Police quickly arrived on the scene, launching a manhunt for the suspects, who remained at large on Thursday evening.
Security officials confirmed the gang had been on a spree, robbing several other local stores earlier the same day and making this their final heist.
