Xeros beat police to N17 group

Alleged November 17 hit man Savvas Xeros had wanted to join the extreme left-wing terrorists since he was a schoolboy, and went to Athens in search of his future comrades, the 41-year-old icon painter told a Sunday newspaper. Meanwhile, a newspaper poll showed that most Greeks doubt the trial of 19 N17 suspects, which enters its second week today, will reveal the entire truth regarding domestic terrorism. In an interview with the Sunday Ethnos, Kastoria-born Xeros – a priest’s son who is in the dock with two of his brothers – said he decided to join N17 «after rational thought.» «I first started to learn about [the group] at junior high school, and went to Athens specially to find it. We found it after great and complicated efforts, and naturally I had done a lot of work before,» he said. An Alco poll in the Sunday Eleftheros Typos found that 72.3 percent of respondents feel terrorism in Greece has not been fully eradicated, while 59.9 percent said the trial will not reveal the truth on terrorism. And 42.6 percent found the defendants’ manner in court «arrogant.»
