BUS ACCIDENT

One killed, 23 injured near Trikala A 37-year-old pedestrian was killed and 23 people injured after an intercity KTEL bus bound for Ioannina from Thessaloniki skidded and overturned near Trikala early on Saturday morning. The accident happened after the bus driver swerved to avoid Dimitrios Ziakas – who was trying to cross the Larissa-Trikala national road – but failed to control the vehicle due to the slipperiness of the road, police said. The driver and 22 passengers, who were not seriously injured, were given first-aid treatment at Trikala’s general hospital. Last month, 16 people were killed when a KTEL bus plunged into the Aliakmon river in northern Greece. Abuser thwarted A 28-year-old man who allegedly forced an 8-year-old boy into his car on Sunday evening in Aghioi Anargyroi, western Athens, with the intention of sexually abusing the child was thwarted by an off-duty policeman who witnessed the abduction. The man, identified only as M.I., released the boy from his car about 500 meters from where he had picked him up after being pursued by officer Andreas Dolias on a motorcycle. Soccer riots Panathinaikos soccer fans on Sunday caused damage to shops and parked cars when throwing stones at Panionios soccer team’s supporters’ club, in the Athenian suburb of Brahami, shortly after the two teams drew in a match.
