IOC officials, sponsors vie for 2004 tickets

Two months before tickets for the 2004 Olympics go on sale to the general public, over a quarter of the seats set aside for sports federations and sponsors have already been reserved, Athens 2004 officials said yesterday. The organizing committee said 730,000 seats worth some 50 million euros have been reserved so far – 27.3 percent of the total 2.3 million tickets allocated to the «Olympic family» of International Olympic Committee and sports federations officials, and to Games sponsors. «Demand so far has exceeded all anticipation, and, in some cases, such as with the national Olympic committees, is higher than the percentage of seats reserved for their needs,» an Athens 2004 statement said. Ominously, it added that demand for events such as swimming exceeds the total seating capacity of sports venues. Sales for the public (online or at Alpha Bank branches) start on May 12.
