Athens metro, tram services to halt after fatal depot accident

Metro, electric train, and tram services in Athens will be suspended on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. following a fatal work accident at the Athens Urban Rail Transport Company (STASY) depot in Piraeus, the company said. The stoppage will affect Metro Line 1, which runs between Kifissia and Piraeus, as well as Lines 2 and 3 and the tram.

The suspension comes after a chief rolling stock technician was fatally injured during routine technical work at the Piraeus repair base on Wednesday morning. According to STASY management, the employee sustained fatal injuries while performing standard maintenance tasks.

Local media outlet 902.gr reported that the worker was crushed by a heavy load that fell on him. Firefighters freed him and rushed him to Tzaneio Hospital in Piraeus, where doctors confirmed his death.

Athens Metro Workers’ Union (SELMA) vice president Spyros Revythis offered condolences to the family and attributed the incident to safety deficiencies and chronic underestimation of hazards, rather than to chance. He called for a full investigation and significant safety improvements to prevent further fatalities.

STASY also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

Authorities, in coordination with the company, are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
