Soldier, 19, killed in Rhodes ammunition explosion

A 19-year-old professional soldier (EPOP) serving in a National Guard battalion on the eastern Aegean island of Rhodes was killed in an explosion on Wednesday, while another soldier was seriously injured, local media reported.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. in the coastal Afantou area, when two military ordnance personnel were handling weapons and hand grenades. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion was triggered when one of the soldiers accidentally set off a defensive hand grenade during an ammunition inspection.

The blast killed the 19-year-old instantly. The second soldier was seriously injured and reportedly suffered amputations. Doctors at Rhodes Hospital are working to save his life.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
