Fatal accident was ‘neither random nor isolated,’ says rail workers federation

Greece’s railway workers federation expressed outrage Wednesday over a fatal workplace accident at the Piraeus repair base, where a worker was killed on the job.

The Panhellenic Federation of Railway and Fixed Track Workers said the incident was “neither random nor isolated” and attributed it to “systematic disregard for safety measures, understaffing, lack of adequate training and longstanding administrative neglect.”

The union described employees’ daily environment as a “minefield.” It demanded an immediate and independent investigation, full accountability and suspension of hazardous work until proper safety measures are implemented. The statement warned that authorities could face union opposition if meaningful action is not taken.

The federation extended condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that “our duty is to ensure that no worker returns to their job without knowing if they will come back alive.”
