Storms intensify as heavy rain, hail forecast across Greece

Heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms began early Wednesday across parts of Greece, with particularly intense activity reported in Corfu and the Epirus region, according to weather service meteo.gr.

Forecasters warned that conditions would worsen Wednesday night, affecting the Ionian Islands, western mainland, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Storms in western areas are expected to be especially severe and could produce hail. Overnight into Thursday, rainfall and thunderstorms will spread to much of the country, including Athens and Thessaloniki.

Thursday’s storms could bring very heavy rainfall and hail, particularly in the Ionian Islands, western mainland, Peloponnese and northeastern regions, with hail in some areas potentially large in size.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue Friday, with heavy showers and storms reaching the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, alongside strong southern winds and elevated dust concentrations. Authorities urged residents to exercise caution during the severe weather.
