Church, Left hit at war

Some 30,000 Athenians held a third peace demonstration in three days of war in Iraq on Saturday, marching to the US Embassy, while the head of the Church of Greece and left-wing politicians denounced the American attack. Similar demonstrations were held around the country, while yesterday anti-war protesters gathered outside the NATO military base at Aktion, western Greece. Archbishop Christodoulos criticized Washington, arguing that «those who today fight Saddam Hussein are the same people who armed him. This is hypocrisy.» Communist Party leader Aleka Papariga said it was imperative that the war should stop and that the Americans and British be defeated. «Otherwise, a US regime will be installed… while the Europeans will squabble between themselves in an attempt to get some of the spoils,» she said. Synaspismos Left Coalition condemned the «barbaric invasion.»
