Union steps up ticket price protest

Members of the Communist Party-affiliated PAME union on Wednesday began placing trash bags over ticket machines at various stations on the Piraeus-Kifissia urban electric railway (ISAP) in Athens.

Their campaign is part of an effort to create a protest movement against ticket price increases that are due to come into effect on February 1.

The cost of using public transport is set to increase by up to 40 percent from the start of next month in a bid to bring some much-needed funds into the debt-ridden companies managing the network.
