Cretan caught with Kalashnikov ammo and pistol blames friend

A 29-year-old Cretan whose pickup truck was found to contain a case with 6,480 bullets for a Kalashnikov assault rifle as well as a pistol was granted conditional release on Wednesday after he told police that he had lent the vehicle to a 30-year-old friend.

The case was found below the front passenger seat of the car, which had been parked near the Giofyro in the prefecture of Iraklio.

A prosecutor said the 29-year-old would not be charged until his friend has been found and questioned.
