Terror suspect, 23, remanded over letter bombs

A 23-year-old man believed to be a member of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire guerrilla group and arrested on Wednesday after officers found a 9-millimeter Glock pistol in his possession was remanded in custody on Friday after being brought before an investigating magistrate.

The man, who police have identified as Michalis Nikolopoulos, refused to respond to charges of participating in last November?s letter bomb campaign, saying that he did not recognize the legitimacy of the Greek judiciary authorities. The wave of letter bombs sent out in November targeted several foreign embassies in Athens and caused international alarm when one of the packages reached the Berlin office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
