Five detained after violent clashes over landfill

Five people were detained on criminal charges on Wednesday following a night of violent clashes in Keratea, southeastern Attica, between riot police and demonstrators protesting the government?s plans to build a landfill in the area.

Officers said the violence started when youths broke off from a crowd of protesters and starting hurling Molotov cocktails and stones at the local police headquarters.

The lawyers of the five detained demonstrators claimed that police had been conducting searches of local houses without arrest warrants and in the absence of a prosecutor. The local prosecutor, for his part, claimed to have sent five officials to the site.

Keratea residents have appealed a court decision that allows the landfill to be constructed just a few kilometers from their community.
