A scheme to tackle fare dodging on public transport in Attica was launched in its pilot phase on Monday on 23 bus routes in the region.

Passengers on those buses were required as of Monday to board from the front door of the vehicle and to show their ticket or bus card to the driver.

The numbers of the routes on which the scheme is being tested are 24, 25, 025, 026, 027, 054, 060, 100, 209, 227, 602, 651, 653, 859, 114, 116, 120, 124, 125, 128, 149, 162 and 170.

The public transport system in the Greek capital is estimated to incur losses of more than 30 million euros a year as a result of fare dodging.
