Athens complains about Skopje arch

The Greek Foreign Ministry has lodged an official complaint to authorities in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) following the inauguration last Friday in Skopje of an ostentatious arch which is modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and features images of historical figures including the ancient Greek warrior Alexander the Great.

The 21-meter-high arch is the work of Valentina Stefanovska, who also designed a giant statue of Alexander that was unveiled in Skopje last June.

Greece has accused FYROM of failing to cooperate in United Nations-mediated talks aimed at settling a dispute over the Balkan nation?s official name.
