Fylis landfill is destination for much of nation’s waste
The capital’s main landfill at Fyli, northwestern Attica, is being swamped with deliveries of trash from across the country including loads from the popular tourist destination of Myconos, in the southern Aegean, according to citizens’ groups.
The Fyli landfill, which has been extended twice to accommodate the capitals’ trash disposal demands, is being burdened with around 10,000 tons of garbage per day, triple the volume of refuse that it has been designed to accommodate, according to citizens’ initiatives, which have expressed fears that the trash being dumped at Fylis includes industrial waste.
The situation at the Fyli landfill has fueled protests by local authorities too, with local Mayor Dimitris Bouraimis calling for the intervention of central government. “Instead of a nationwide plan for waste management, we have one huge dumping spot for 95 percent of waste from Attica and for 40 percent from the rest of the country,” he said.
