Third suspect arrested for fatal police shooting

A third suspected member of the gang involved in the fatal shooting of two police officers in Rendi, southwestern Athens, in March was arrested on Sunday.

Police said the 24-year-old man was arrested in the northern suburb of Acharnai. He is a 24-year-old ethnic Greek from Russia. The unnamed suspect is due to face a prosecutor on Monday.

Two men aged 36 and 28 and both ethnic Greeks from Russia, were arrested last week in connection to the killing of Giorgos Skyloyiannis, 22, and Yiannis Evangelinelis, 23, members of the DIAS motorcycle-riding squad.

Police said their arrests were helped by DNA evidence and fingerprints found at the scene of the crime, police said.

Authorities were also assisted in their efforts by wiretaps. Sources said that the gang had been planning to ambush an Athens businessman who would be carrying a large amount of cash.

Police are thought to be looking for at least one more person in connection to the March 1 shooting.
