Thessaloniki university faces closure
The rector of Thessaloniki?s Aristotle University, Yiannis Mylopoulos, said on Tuesday that the prestigious institution would be forced to shut down unless it receives additional funding.
Speaking to Skai?s Proti Grammi (Front Line) news program, Mylopoulos said that he had asked the cash-strapped government for funding to support the university?s operation amid speculation about the closure of several faculties. He said that the university, which has seen its funding cut by 55 percent, had been pledged 24 million euros though it needs a minimum of 36 million euros to cover its operating costs.
The rector said that great efforts were being made to keep the university open, with all its faculties operational.
