Protest in Piraeus as water company aims to auction customers’ home over unpaid bills

There was a protest outside the offices of the Athens Water and Sewage Company in Piraeus on Monday morning to prevent the confiscation and auction of woman’s home due to a debt of nearly 750 euros.

The woman, a mother of two children, is reported to owe EYDAP 733 euros.

The government has suspended the right of banks to confiscate and auction off customers’ homes over unpaid debts. The restriction is in place until the end of the year but the coalition would like to extend it for another year.

There is pressure, however, from the troika to lift the measure because it is deemed to be exacerbating the problems in the property market.
