Greece tops Europol terrorism list

Out of 45 domestic terrorist attacks carried out in Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and Greece last year, nearly half occurred in Greece, according to a Europol report released on Friday.

A total of 20 attacks, attributed to guerrilla organizations, were recorded in Greece, according to the report which also notes that six out of the seven fatalities occurred in Greece.

The report noted a 30 percent increase in domestic terrorist attacks in Greece last year. It also drew a connection between a growing recession in Europe and a spike in attacks linked to self-styled anarchists and extremists.

The report noted that political unrest in North Africa increased the risk of terrorist attacks by members of Islamic fundamentalist groups such as Al-Qaida.
