Greece reports 21 pct drop in tourism turnover

Turnover in the Greek tourism sector dropped by nearly 21 per cent in the first quarter of the year against the corresponding period in 2010, according to a report that was released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Thursday.

Nevertheless, tourism officials are confident that the 2011 summer high season will be better than 2010, due to reduced rates offered by hotels and resorts in the east Mediterranean country.

Amongst others, longer opening hours will be instituted at dozens of museums and archaeological sites around Greece, including a dusk closing hour at the Acropolis. [EPA]
