Policemen linked to extortion

Two senior police officers have been detained on suspicion of running a protection racket extorting nightclubs and cafes in the coastal suburbs of Athens, police said on Thursday.

Both officers were suspended and referred to a prosecutor, according to police who said they also detained 12 club and cafe managers alleged to have paid between 1,000 euros and 2,000 euros per month in bribes.

The wife of one of the two officers was also arrested in connection with the affair.
