Megara landfill fire under control

A fire that broke out in a Megara landfill in the early hours of Thursday has been brought under partial control, a local offficial has said.

The fire started at 3.15 a.m. and was reinforced by strong winds blowing in the area.

Speaking on Skai TV, Megara Mayor Yiannis Marinakis noted that another fire had broken out in the same area two days ago, adding that authorities had taken measures to prevent another fire in the rubbish dump.

Deputy Interior Minister Paris Koukoulopoulos criticized opposition to government efforts to create new waste management facilities.

?People demonize waste management and have to put up with the landfills as a result,? Koukoulopoulos said in an interview with Skai on Thursday.

The fire posed no threat to residential areas.
