Trash dumps shut in protest at austerity measures

The municipal workers? union (POE-OTA) decided to shut down from midnight on Sunday Athens?s landfill at Ano Liosia and the Mavrorachi dump in Thessaloniki until Parliament votes on the government?s medium-term fiscal plan.

The vote is due to take place on Wednesday, until when there are likely to be no trash collections in Athens and Thessaloniki.

POE-OTA also decided that there should be sit-in protests at all of the country?s municipalities from noon today until the end of the working day.
