Trash cleanup to begin in Thessaloniki

Members of the municipal workers? union (POE-OTA) who shut down Thessaloniki?s main landfill on Sunday ahead of a 48-hour strike and two controversial austerity votes in Parliament ended their blockade yesterday.

Although the landfill?s operation is back to normal, it will take several days for the workers to clean up thousands of tons of trash that have piled up on the streets of the northern port city.

Municipal workers staged similar action in the capital, blocking the entrance to the main landfill in Ano Liosia, northwest of Athens.
