Police probed over tear gas

The row over the tactics used by the police during Wednesday?s protest in Athens intensified on Friday as the leader of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), Alexis Tsipras, filed a suit against the force while a prosecutor launched a separate investigation into the incidents.

Tsipras gave Supreme Court prosecutor Yiannis Tentes two CDs containing photos and videos of what he said was police violence. He also asked Tentes to look into whether the chemicals contained in the tear gas used by officers were dangerous. ?What took place was a clear violation of democracy,? said Tsipras. ?I hope that some of our beleaguered democracy?s institutions will now work properly.?

Athens first instance prosecutor Eleni Raikou launched a probe following complaints by the head of the pharmacies? union regarding the extensive use of tear gas. The president of the Association of Pharmacies of Attica, Konstantinos Lourantos, described the police?s behavior as ?criminal.?
