Smuggling boat stopped off Kythira

Two Turkish smugglers and a group of 21 undocumented immigrants were being detained on Crete on Tuesday after a vessel belonging to Frontex, the European Union?s border monitoring agency, intercepted their vessel off the island of Kythira.

The migrants, who declared themselves to be Afghans, were being held in the premises of the old City Hall of the port of Hania. The smugglers, both Turkish nationals, were being questioned by Coast Guard and police officials.

The vessel the smugglers had used had set sail from neighboring Turkey and had been destined for Italy, Greek authorities said.
