Taxi drivers call strike for Wednesday

There will be no taxis serving the capital and other major Greek cities on Wednesday as cabbies stage a 24-hour strike.

Taxi drivers are protesting plans heralded by Transport Minister Yiannis Ragousis to fully open up their profession to competition.

Unionists claim that the 30,000 or so cabbies serving the country?s roads are more than adequate and that relaxing limits on accession to the sector would result in a glut of drivers and curb their income which is already down as a result of the economic crisis.

On Crete, taxi drivers started their action Tuesday.
