Toll charge reduction back in idle

An initiative to reduce charges at highway tolls has hit a snag, Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Yiannis Magriotis told Parliament on Thursday.

Following months of protests by motorists and residents of villages affected by rising tolls, the government reached a gentlemen?s agreement with the consortia that manage various sections of the highway network for charges to be reduced.

However, Magriotis said that this might not happen because the operators are facing funding problems because the banks that back them are ?not convinced about the viability of the projects,? which include the construction of new national road sections.
