Fire wrecks store in Kolonos
A large fire that broke out shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday in the ground-floor furniture store of a five-floor block in Kolonos, near central Athens, was extinguished before it could spread to adjacent apartments.
The store itself, on Lenorman Street, was gutted despite the efforts of 24 firemen manning eight engines as the wooden furniture and other flammable materials fed the flames.
But residents in the apartments located above the store and in adjacent blocks were evacuated before any harm could come to them.
It remained unclear whether the fire started by accident or as a result of arson.
