Zakynthos coast guard chief suspended in racket probe

Investigations on the Ionian island of Zakynthos into drug-trafficking and protection rackets led police to the chief of the island?s coast guard, it was reported on Monday.

The high-ranking officer was not arrested but he has been suspended pending the verdict of an administrative inquiry into charges of breaching confidentiality.

The police got onto the coast guard chief?s trail in the context of a broader investigation using phone taps run by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) into organized crime syndicates.

Inquiries are also pending against the chief of the Katerini coast guard in northern Greece and the stand-in head of the Oikos Naftou sailors? healthcare fund over a shortfall of more than 100,000 euros in the organization?s coffers.
