Shelter director on graft charge
The director of the Homeless Shelter of the City of Athens (KYADA) was arrested on Thursday on charges of accepting a bribe, repeated violations of duty and money laundering. Also facing charges is KYADA?s president and a 43-year-old associate.
The corruption case was unearthed by the Greek police?s internal affairs department with the aid of Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis. According to police reports, the 45-year-old general manager of a private company supplying the shelter with readymade meals, reported the KYADA director for demanding a payment of 10,000 euros for preferential treatment in future tenders. The supplier further charged that the shelter?s president and an associate demanded a payment amounting to 10 percent of money owed to the private company (which stands at 406,000 euros) in order to release the necessary funds for the payment.
Following police instructions, the 45-year-old supplier met with the KYADA director on Thursday night and handed over an envelope containing 10,000 euros. The director was then arrested.
