Shoot-up, car chase in Fthiotida holdup

A fleet of police cars was hot on the trail on Tuesday of three armed robbers who held up a bank in the town of Atalanti in the prefecture of Fthiotida.

Officers arrived at the scene of the robbery to see three hooded men making off in a large silver car after having help up a bank and made off with a large amount of cash. The assailants were armed with two Kalashnikov assault rifles and a handgun, and fired shots against the police.

A few moments later, a police patrol spotted the vehicle carrying the three robbers in the village of Proskyna, though they were unable to stop it.

The getaway car then sped into a public square in the village of Tragana, with the assailants shooting their guns in the air, before making off toward the national highway, where police continued to chase them and set up roadblocks at key exit points.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) party, Giorgos Karatzaferis, was in the square in Tragana, where he has a summer home, sitting at a cafe when the getaway car sped by.

No injuries were reported during the incident on Tuesday afternoon, though the chase was continuing.
