Megalopoli dump protest

Around 200 people, including members of the municipal council of Megalopoli in the southern Peloponnese, occupied two conveyor belts carrying lignite to the Public Power Corporation plant in the area on Wednesday for just over an hour.

The group were protesting plans for an industrial waste dump to be constructed in the area and are hoping for a meeting with Environment Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou today in which they can voice their concerns, which include environmental factors given that the Alfeios River runs just 200 meters from the site of the planned landfill.

A spokesperson from the group suggested that if the plan does go ahead, the local community is ready to ramp up its protest action.
