Four ELA suspects also connected to May 1

Four suspected members of the Revolutionary Popular Struggle (ELA) terrorist group, currently in detention at Korydallos Prison, are now also implicated in two attacks for which another group, May 1, has taken responsibility, sources said yesterday. Examining judge Leonidas Zervobeakos brought fresh charges against Costas Agapiou, Angeletos Kanas, Christos Tsigaridas and Irene Athanassaki during a visit to Korydallos on Wednesday, the sources said. The four are accused of being the moral instigators of the murder of prosecutor Anastassios Vernardos in 1989 and the attempted murder of General Confederation of Greek Labor President Giorgos Raftopoulos in 1987. Zervobeakos – who got his evidence from sources including the ex-East German intelligence service – said the two attacks had been conducted by ELA using the name May 1 as a cover, the sources added.
