Minister rings alarm bell over illegal brothels

In a letter to Parliament on Thursday, Interior Minister Haris Kastanidis warned about the mushrooming of illegal prostitution in the broader Athens area, noting that authorities had shut down some 300 unlicensed brothels from the beginning of the year to mid-July.

Kastanidis noted that there are just three brothels operating within the boundaries of the City of Athens with proper licenses. He went on to proposed changes to the relevant legislation, adding that authorities cannot keep up with the pace of illegal prostitution, as premises that are shut down are often forced open later and put back into operation.
