Paralympics ‘basis for change in attitudes’

The Paralympics in Athens next year is an opportunity for Greece to create a network of voluntary workers and conscientious citizens which will form the foundation for a broader change in social attitudes toward the disabled, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos said on Saturday at the end of a two-day international conference on disabled athletes and the Paralympics. Next year’s Paralympics after the Olympics – and athletics generally – represent an opportunity for disabled individuals to participate on the same level as other citizens, Venizelos said. The conference was organized by his ministry in cooperation with the General Secretariat for Sports. «The Greek (European Union) Presidency… supports the introduction of EU legislation to combat discrimination on every level that the EU’s competencies allow,» Venizelos added.
