Hundreds protest July 11 blast on Cyprus in 300km march

Hundreds of citizens protesting an explosion at a naval base on Cyprus that resulted in the deaths of 13 people have been marching since last Thursday — on the one-month anniversary of the tragedy — from the town of Paphos on the southeastern coast of the island and were expected to reach Nicosia late on Wednesday, after first having walked to the naval base in Mari on the outskirts of Limassol, where they laid a memorial wreath on August 13.

The protesters have said that their 300-kilometer march is being held in honor of the victims of the July 11 blast at an ammunition depot on the naval base and that they will camp outside the presidential palace in the Cypriot capital until they get a meeting with President Dimitris Christofias.

A spokesman from the group earlier rejected an invitation for a meeting with the government spokesman, saying that they will only speak to the president himself.
