Tourism sector workers call strike

Workers in the tourism sector have called a 24-hour strike for Tuesday, August 23, and are planning a rally at Klafthmonos Square on Stadiou Street in central Athens, starting at 11 a.m.

An announcement by unionists on Thursday said that the strike is being held in protest at government plans for certain professions within the sector to be struck off the list entitling employees such as cooks, bakers, dishwashers and chambermaids to hazard pay.

Participation in the strike, however, is expected to be low and to have little impact on tourism services.
