Trafficker stabs officer in Evros

A 51-year-old policeman on border patrol in Evros in northern Greece was injured in a scuffle with a suspected human trafficker on Thursday, according to reports.

The policeman received multiple stab wounds — none of which was serious — as he tried to arrest a 20-year-old Iraqi man who had been seen rowing a boat across the river that marks Greece?s border with Turkey.

Also in the boat were the 20-year-old?s accomplice and compatriot, aged 19, as well as a 24-year-old man from Pakistan, believed to be an illegal immigrant.

Meanwhile, coast guard officers in Patra intercepted a lorry carrying 21 illegal immigrants as it was boarding a ferry to Italy, and authorities off the western port town of Astakos stopped a boat carrying 36 Afghan illegal migrants.

Both the truck driver and the boat?s captain have been arrested.
