Strong winds fan several fires

Strong winds fanned several blazes over the weekend, razing large tracts of forest and farm land but sparing homes and causing no injuries.

More than 60 firefighters were dispatched on Sunday to fight two blazes in Attica — one near the southern suburb of Lagonisi and the other near Magoula, western Attica. Four waterdropping planes were sent to the Lagonisi blaze after homes were threatened but the fire had been partially controlled by late last night.

Firefighters were also sent to northwestern Evia to contain a large blaze in Skepasti. It was a busy day for the fire service on Crete too, where blazes broke out near Prasies in Rethymno and near a Venetian castle in the popular tourist resort of Frangokastello in Sfakia.

On Saturday, fires broke out on the island of Salamina, off Piraeus, on the Ionian island of Zakynthos and in the northern prefecture of Kastoria.
