More than 100 officers sweep lawless Zoniana

Dozens of police officers combed the mountains around the notoriously lawless Cretan village of Zoniana on Tuesday, seeking to locate cannabis plantations.

The raid, which involved more than 100 officers of the special services (EKAM), comes less than two weeks after a botched police raid on Zoniana that led to a local police chief slapping a subordinate after the latter tried to arrest a local cannabis producer.

In November 2007, villagers ambushed a police convoy outside Zoniana, seriously injuring an officer and foiling a bid to crack crime gangs in the area.
