Anarchists attack police in Exarchia

Police in the central Athens neighborhood of Exarchia, a stronghold for self-styled anarchists, fought running battles late on Saturday and in the early hours of the morning with large groups of hooded youths who attacked riot police units stationed in the area, pelting them with Molotov cocktails and stones.

The first attack occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday and involved around 20 people, police said. The second attack, close to the Culture Ministry offices, occured shortly before 3 a.m.

A group of 40 assailants threw firebombs before setting fire to a garbage dumpster. The third attack took place about half an hour later and involved a much larger group of about 70 people.

Police, who used tear gas to disperse the protesters in most cases, said that four people had been detained in connection with the attacks.
