Disability claims in Thessaloniki probed

Checks being conducted by Health Ministry inspectors have unveiled another case of suspect disability claims.

Deputy Health Minister Markos Bolaris said that an unjustifiably large number of Thessaloniki residents had submitted claims last year.

Bolaris said that the 1,157 incapacity claims ?could only be justified if Greece had taken part in the Vietnam War.?

He said that the Thessaloniki Prefecture, which no longer exists, had been paying 7.7 million euros per month for these benefits last year, compared to 6 million euros per month in 2010.

Earlier this year, the number of people registered as being blind on the island of Zakynthos was revealed to be suspiciously high. That investigation is yet to be completed.
