Eroglu proposal over Cyprus gas

Dervis Eroglu, leader of the breakaway state on northern Cyprus, said both sides on the divided island must halt plans for offshore gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean until they have reached a peace settlement.

Alternatively, said Eroglu during talks with UN Secretary General Bann Ki-moon in New York on Saturday, an ad-hoc committee should be established, comprising Greek and Turkish Cypriots, who will meet to give approvals and licenses for drills.

There was no reaction from Nicosia, which has already said it is willing to share gas benefits with the breakaway state, which is recognized only by Ankara.
