Finance Ministry sit-in continues

Protesters have ended their sit-in demonstrations in all but one government ministry buildings which were staged on Thursday to protest cutbacks across Greece’s state sector.

Ministry employees continue to block the entrance to the finance ministry in central Athens where Evangelos Venizelos, the socialist administration’s finance minister, was due to meet with visiting troika officials on Thursday.

Some 200 protesters earlier gathered in front of the finance ministry headquarters, shouting: ?Take your memorandum and leave? ? a reference to the bailout deal signed between the PASOK government and the debt-wrecked nation’s foreign creditors, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

“The sit-ins are carried out today when the troika returns to our country and as we face new barbaric measures which were decided and are being decided for further wage reductions… new tax hikes and mass layoffs,» the civil servants’ union ADEDY said in a statement issued earlier Thursday.

The union group has planned a rally at Klafthmonos Square, central Athens, at 18.00 p.m.
