Police investigate drug rackets in prison
A total of 60 suspects, including 13 inmates being held for drug-related crimes, have been charged in connection with a drug-trafficking scheme inside two Greek prisons.
Sources told Kathimerini on Friday that police in Larissa, central Greece, are also probing several prison officers stationed at the Grevena and Trikala facilities for their possible involvement in the scheme. Authorities suspect a 38-year-old Bulgarian inmate at the Grevena facility of having played a key role in the ring, which is also suspected of smuggling mobile phones into the units.
According to police investigating the movement of cash in the drug trafficking, the racket made some 2 million euros in revenues. Part of the money was allegedly sent abroad through money transfer companies such as Western Union, to a number of countries including Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Italy.
