ND leader insists on elections

General elections are a «national necessity,» Antonis Samaras, the leader of the main opposition New Democracy party told reporters following his meeting with President Karolos Papaoulias in Athens on Tuesday.

In a brief statement to the press, the leader of the conservative party said that Prime Minister George Papandreou’s call for a confidence vote in Parliament and a referendum on Greece’s bailout agreement with his creditors is «divisive and extortionist.»

«It is my historical responsibility to do whatever it takes so that the country’s European prospects and its future are not thrown into new adventures,» Samaras said ahead of his meeting with Papoulias.

Samaras is planning to meet with his MPs on Wednesday amid speculation that he will ask his entire Parliamentary group to resign, a move that would effectively lead to the dissolution of Parliament and a call to general elections.

«It is imperative that the existing plans do not find any accomplices, at least in us,» the New Democracy leader said.
