Roma reprisals following brawl death
A barrage of arson attacks on two minimarkets and two homes in Zefyri and Menidi, northwestern Athens, late on Monday night is being attributed by police to reprisals following the death of a 25-year-old Roma man over the weekend following a violent brawl that left another five people injured.
According to police, all four targets belong to relatives of the suspect who is believed to have shot the 25-year-old dead during a violent brawl in Menidi last Friday night. The owners of the two stores and the homes had abandoned the premises ahead of the arson attacks, clearly having foreseen the reprisals.
Firefighters managed to bring the blazes under control before they could spread or cause any injuries but on arrival at the Roma settlements they were obstructed by a large group of angry residents.
